Power outage in downtown Vancouver (04.30.2015)
Dear valued client,

Please advised: On the 29th of April, 2015 W3 was affected by a BC Hydro power outage, that disrupted power to the financial district of Vancouver’s downtown core. The outage was due to a BC Hydro cable issue.



As is normal procedure, W3 switched to UPS and generator power, however due to the loss of environmentals, in particular building ventilation, and the fact that many of our fiber providers only have a 2 hour runtime on their local routers, it was decided to safe power down some of the servers to minimize damage to the hardware.

Update: power outage occur due to “wire dug up” according to BC Hydro.

Details: Deployment of new infrastructure our Downtown Vancouver Fiber Ring. Objective is to improve convergence time during a fiber cut or power outage from 60 seconds to 50 milliseconds.

Expected Downtime: Several hits of up to 60 seconds each across the duration of the maintenance window.

W3 has been given notification by our upstream fiber provider that they will be upgrading their network infrastructure on the 10th and 11th of August. Although they do not anticipate any lengthy disruptions, client may experience very brief disruptions in service as they test. The upgrade is scheduled for 8pm - 11pm PST both evenings.

Network upgrade (12.13.2011)
Details: Epik Networks, one of the providers that supplies W3 with fiber, will be upgrading their system hub to increase redundancy and capacity. These upgrades will benefit W3 clients with better quality, reliability and speed of network service at no extra cost to our clients.

The scheduled upgrade is slated for 2300 - 0200 EST. Although we do not anticipate any major disruptions, clients may experience brief disruptions for validation and testing during the period specified.

Duration: estimated downtime around 30 min or less

Details:

NTXweb0-block boxes have been scheduled for upgrade of server hardware.  In order to perform some of these tasks, the servers will need to be offline for a period estimated around 30 mins.  Tech has scheduled the task at 22:00 PST to minimize the disruption to our clients.

Dragon Boat Festival iTouch Raffle Winner (06.30.2008)

At the 20th anniversary Dragon Boat Festival on June 21st & 22nd , 2008, the W3 Media team donated their time to sell bottled water and iTouch raffle tickets in support of Earthquake victims in China and cyclone victims in Burma/Myanmar.

Efforts raised over $1100.00 during the Festival weekend, and 100% of the proceeds will be donated to the Asian disaster relief effort through Oxfam.

W3 Provides Expert Media Opinion on Computer Banking Glitch (06.04.2004)

On Thursday 3 June 2004 the Royal Bank of Canada remained days behind in updating its customer accounts as a computer program delayed payroll deposits for thousands of government employees.

Canada's largest bank said it did not expect to process Thursday's transactions until the weekend. RBC had previously said the backlog would be cleared by Thursday, but by that afternoon the system was still verifying transactions from Wednesday. The problem caused delays in depositing employee payrolls handled by the bank, with Ontario government workers among those affected.

W3 Media's Senior Web Developer and Technical Manager Ben Koshy has been credited with being the first person to identify the so-called ‘Slammer’ virus which has been attacking computer systems world wide. He identified the virus late at night in one of his regular checks of network performance at W3 Media’s head office in Vancouver. His prompt action enabled W3 to safeguard its many customers from the worst effects of the attack.
